Types Of Wheelchairs

There are many different types and styles of wheelchairs. Wheelchair users have numerous options when selecting the best type of wheelchair to suit their needs.

The main two categories of types of wheelchairs are electric and manual. Wheelchair users who use manual wheelchairs must propel the wheelchairs forward themselves.

Not all wheelchair users are able to use manual wheelchairs. In those cases, an electric wheelchair may be the best choice. If a doctor feels that the wheelchair user requires the use of an electric wheelchair, the wheelchair users insurance may cover at least some of the costs.

A manual wheelchair and an electric wheelchair are not the only types of wheelchairs. Besides different styles and models, both electric and manual wheelchairs come in adult and pediatric wheelchair models.

A less common type of wheelchair is built to cross a specific terrain. Beach wheelchairs have wider wheels for easier maneuverability over sand. Snow wheelchairs have wide, rounded wheels to make crossing snow easier.

Some wheelchair types are designed for certain body types. While a pediatric wheelchair is designed for children, bariatric wheelchairs are designed for larger or obese wheelchair users.

Types of electric wheelchairs vary by the batteries they use, which wheels propel the wheelchair, and the control device. The standard control device for electric wheelchairs is a small joystick feature on one of the armrests.

Not all wheelchair users are able to control a wheelchair by using a device that requires the use of a hand. Some wheelchair controls are tubes that are mounted near the wheelchair user's mouth which allows the wheelchair user to control and steer the wheelchair by blowing and sucking on the tubes.

A mobility scooter or wheelbase electric wheelchair is a type of electric wheelchair that has steering components in front of the wheelchair user. Many models of scooters have a horizontal steering bar.

The wheelchair user may be able to turn the chair to allow the wheelchair user to get in and out of the wheelchair easier. Some mobility scooters are not able to turn corners as sharply as other types of electric wheelchairs.

If a wheelchair user cannot find a type of wheelchair that meets all their needs, they may be able to modify a wheelchair with the addition of wheelchair accessories. Oxygen tank holders, cupholders, and cane holders are examples of wheelchair accessories that may be helpful for a wheelchair user.

Always check your wheelchair parts frequently. Paying most attention to the wheelchair tires, as they are the only contact point of the chair to the ground. Be safe not sorry.
