Cerebral Palsy Child: A Victim of Medical Malpractice?

Cerebral palsy (CP)has different levels of severity and a child with cerebral palsy has many needs depending on their severity. If the child's condition is severe, they usually also suffer from other conditions such as epilepsy or mental retardation. The child will require ongoing medication, assistance devices, therapy, hours of care and surgeries. All this care for the child will be financially overwhelming so it is important to know all you need to know regarding rights as a parent.

Organizations such as non-profit, government or local agencies can assist families of children with cerebral palsy to all information regarding medical malpractice. Families can be entitled to costs from another source such as a lawsuit. Families can be eligible for financial damages through a cerebral palsy lawsuit that will include pain and suffering, medical treatment costs and other related expenses.

Cerebral Palsy is caused by brain damage before or during child birth. Many factors contribute to the development of CP. Possibilities that can contribute to CP are infections to newborns, low birth weight, jaundice, seizures, just to name a few. Children with cerebral palsy are likely to have a variety of special needs. This condition puts a lot of stress and pressure on families. They need to know where they can turn for help. There are many cerebral palsy associations in your surrounding area that can help with financial needs, information and education on cerebral palsy.

Below is a list of cerebral palsy associations in your area:

United Cerebral Palsy

In 1949, United Cerebral Palsy was founded. This organization dedicates their services to improve the rights of individuals with disabilities. UCP offers many services nationwide such as housing, therapy, job assistance, and support for families. UCP is committed to improving independent productivity for individuals with disabilities also.

Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation (CPIRF)

CPIRF was founded in 1955. They are devoted in supporting research related to developmental disabilities. They are dedicated to improving health care services for families. CPIRF supports research in areas like prevention and rehabilitation.

CHASA or The Children's Hemiplegia and Stroke Association

Another cerebral palsy organization is the Childrens Hemiplegia and Stroke Association (CHASA). Parents of children with cerebral palsy known as hemiplegia formed CHASA. CHASA believes in support for the family. They spend their time and money into research and education for families dealing with these issues.

Easter Seals

In the 1900s, Easter Seals was founded to assist special needs people. They are committed in the research of developing disabilities. Families can turn to this association for help with medical rehabilitation, child assistance, activities, and they provide training for employees.

March of Dimes

Dedicated to research and education for disabilities such as cerebral palsy, is The March of Dimes. Their mission is to prevent birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. The March of Dimes website has information on issues that pertain caring for a newborn with disabilities.

National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities

NICHCY offers programs to families of children with developmental disabilities. Families can get overwhelmed about what to do when they have a child with CP. NICHCY has programs for parents about resources, and education for children with special needs.

National Disability Sports Alliance

In 1987, an organization began that would be in charge of putting together competitive sports for those with disabilities. This organization is the National Disability Sports Alliance. The staff will put together games for the individuals that would like to be a part of the sporting competition. They put together rules and regulations and policies for the games. There are selected athletes that represent the United States in global competition.
